Pan

Generation IX · Shepherds, wild music, sudden panic

Portrait of Pan

Goat-legged and horned from birth, Pan so delighted the Olympians that his very name was said to mean 'all.' God of shepherds, flocks, and the wild uplands of Arcadia, he pipes on the reeds that were once the nymph Syrinx, who fled his pursuit and was transformed at the river's edge. The unreasoning fright that seizes travelers in lonely places — panic — is his gift and his signature. Son of Hermes; his mother is variously named a daughter of Dryops or Penelope — not seated here.
