Youngest and boldest of the twelve, the crooked-counselled Titan who took the adamantine sickle from his mother's hand and gelded his father Uranus to seize the sky. Warned that his own child would unseat him, he swallowed each newborn whole, until Rhea fed him a stone wrapped in swaddling and hid the infant Zeus in Crete. Forced at last to disgorge his children, he lost the ten-year war that followed and passed into legend as lord of a vanished Golden Age.
