When Cronus cast the severed flesh of Uranus into the waves, a white foam gathered around it, and out of that foam a goddess took shape and drifted first past Cythera, then stepped ashore on Cyprus with grass springing under her feet. Eros and Desire walked beside her from her first hour, and love, longing, and sweet deceit have been her province among gods and mortals ever since. Hesiod has her born of the sea-foam that gathered around Uranus's severed flesh; Homer instead calls her a daughter of Zeus and Dione — this archive follows Hesiod.
