Eldest of the twelve Titans and the great fresh-water river imagined to ring the whole flat earth, from whose stream the sun and stars were thought to rise and set. With his sister-wife Tethys he peopled the world's waters, fathering three thousand river-gods and three thousand Oceanid daughters. Alone among his brothers he is remembered as standing apart from the wars of the gods, keeping to his distant circling current.
