An Oceanid of the fertile richness of the sea, who married the kindly sea-elder Nereus and bore him the fifty Nereids, the darting sea-nymphs of the Aegean. Through her daughters she is grandmother to some of the sea's most storied figures, among them Thetis's son Achilles and Amphitrite's son Triton. Poets sometimes use her very name to mean the sea itself.
