Silver-footed Thetis, foremost of the Nereids, was courted by Zeus himself until a prophecy warned that her son would outshine his father — so the gods married her to the mortal hero Peleus instead. Her son by Peleus was Achilles, and through the Trojan War she surfaces again and again as his fierce advocate, even begging new-forged armor for him from Hephaestus.
