A Nereid daughter of Nereus and Doris, Amphitrite became Poseidon's consort and queen of every salt water. The story goes that she fled the sea god's courtship to the ocean's farthest edge, until the dolphin Delphinus coaxed her home to marriage — a service Poseidon repaid by setting the dolphin among the stars.
