Phorcys is the old god of the sea's lurking dangers, pictured in later art as a grizzled merman with crab-claw forelegs and spiny skin. With his sister Ceto he sired an astonishing brood of monsters — among them the grey-haired Graiae, born old, and the Gorgons who dwelt at the world's western rim.
