Of the three Gorgon sisters — Stheno, Euryale, and Medusa — only Medusa could die, and it was her doom that made her famous. Snake-haired, with a gaze that turned onlookers to stone, she was beheaded by Perseus, who watched her reflection in his polished shield; from her severed neck sprang Pegasus and Chrysaor, her children by Poseidon.
