Ceto is the primordial goddess of the sea's monstrous depths — her name lives on in the word cetacean, the tribe of whales. Wife to her brother Phorcys, she mothered the most fearsome nursery in Greek myth, from the stone-eyed Gorgons to, in some accounts, the serpent who guarded the golden apples of the Hesperides.
