Swallowed at birth by her father and released with her siblings when Cronus was made to disgorge them, Hera rose to sit beside Zeus as queen of Olympus and keeper of marriage vows. The irony of her office never escaped the poets: wed to the least faithful of husbands, she pursued his lovers and their children with a patience as long as memory itself.
