Borne by Hera alone, in rivalry over Zeus's producing Athena from his own head, Hephaestus is the smith of the gods, master of fire and the forge. Cast down from Olympus — a fall that left him forever lame — he answered rejection with genius: self-moving tripods, golden handmaidens who think and speak, the shield of Achilles, and every marvel heaven ever commissioned came from his workshop. Hesiod has Hera bear him alone, in answer to Zeus's solo birth of Athena; Homer makes him a son of Zeus as well — this archive follows Hesiod.
