Portrait of Aglaea

Youngest of the three Charites whom Eurynome, daughter of Ocean, bore to Zeus, Aglaea is splendour — the shine on festival gold, the brightness in a beloved face. Hesiod records the loveliest of her honours: the smith-god Hephaestus, maker of all beautiful things, chose her as his bride, so that radiance itself came to live in the soot of the forge.
