One of the nine Muses whom Mnemosyne bore to Zeus in Pieria, Erato is the 'lovely one,' Muse of love poetry and the songs sung to the kithara at weddings and courtships. Poets with romances to tell called on her by name — Apollonius summons her before recounting how Medea fell for Jason — and she is often pictured crowned with roses, the flower of her whole domain.
