Portrait of Euterpe

Among the nine sisters born of Zeus and Mnemosyne's nine nights in Pieria, Euterpe is the 'giver of delight,' Muse of music and especially of the aulos, the double reed-pipe whose invention was often credited to her. Hers is the melody that accompanies lyric song, and her name became a byword for the pleasure that well-made music brings.
