Eighth-named of the nine Muses whom Mnemosyne bore to Zeus, this Thalia — 'the flourishing one,' not to be confused with the Grace who shares her name — presides over comedy and idyllic verse. Art gives her the laughing mask and a shepherd's crook, tokens of the country festivals where comedy first grew, and playwrights courted her favour whenever laughter was the goal.
