Warned that his first wife Metis would one day bear a son mightier than himself, Zeus swallowed her whole while she carried their daughter, and in time Athena sprang from his split brow full-grown and fully armed, her war-cry ringing across heaven. Goddess of counsel, craft, and disciplined battle, she gave Athens its olive tree and its name, winning the city from Poseidon by the better gift.
