Son of Zeus and Alcmene, Heracles lived a mortal life of unmatched labor — hounded by Hera from the cradle, where he strangled her serpents, through the Twelve Labors that took him from the Nemean lion's den to the gates of Hades. When the poisoned shirt of Nessus burned him past bearing, he mounted his own pyre on Mount Oeta; the flames took only what was mortal, and he rose to Olympus, reconciled with Hera and wed to her daughter Hebe.
