Portrait of Lachesis

Second of the Moirai, Lachesis measures out the thread her sister spins, allotting to every life its exact length and portion of fortune. Plato gave her the most solemn of duties in his vision of Er: it is before Lachesis that souls awaiting rebirth choose the lives they will lead, and her lots, once drawn, cannot be exchanged. Hesiod elsewhere also names the Moirai daughters of Nyx alone — this archive follows his Zeus-and-Themis account.
