Persephone
Generation VI · Queen of the Underworld
Daughter of Zeus and Demeter, Persephone was gathering flowers when the earth opened and Hades swept her down to be his queen. Because she had eaten pomegranate seeds in the house of the dead she could never wholly leave it, so the year itself was divided: part spent below as sovereign of shades, part above with her mother, whose joy at each reunion is the returning spring.
