Goddess of grain and the worked earth, Demeter spent her infancy swallowed in Cronus's belly until Zeus's stratagem set the six children free. Ages later, when Hades carried off her daughter Persephone, her mourning stilled every field and threatened the world with famine, and the bargain that returned the girl for part of each year is the reason the seasons turn.
