Portrait of Clotho

First of the three Moirai, Clotho draws each mortal life onto her spindle as raw thread the moment it begins. Even the gods deferred to her craft: when Tantalus butchered his son Pelops and served him to heaven, it was Clotho who was called on to gather the boy back from the cauldron and restore him to life, respinning a thread that had been cut too soon. Hesiod elsewhere also names the Moirai daughters of Nyx alone — this archive follows his Zeus-and-Themis account.
