Daughter of Zeus and Mnemosyne and one of the nine, Polyhymnia — 'she of many hymns' — keeps the solemn music offered to the gods: sacred song, and by extension pantomime, eloquence, and meditation. Artists set her apart from her livelier sisters, veiled and pensive, a finger to her lips, as though the holiest music were the kind that borders on silence.
