One of the nine daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne, Melpomene — 'she who sings' — began as a Muse of the chorus and came to rule tragedy, the gravest of the dramatic arts. She carries the sorrowing mask and wears the tragedian's high boots, and some traditions made her, by the river-god Achelous, mother of the Sirens whose songs no sailor could resist.
