Tartarus
Generation II · The abyss beneath the earth
Tartarus is both a power and a place: the murky pit sunk as far below the earth as the sky stands above it, where the defeated Titans were shut away behind bronze doors. Hesiod counts him among the very first things to come into being, and later has him father the dreadful Typhon upon Gaia. Hesiod says Tartarus came to be after Chaos, not from it — he is seated as Chaos's child here to keep one connected tree.
