Augusta of Great Britain (1737–1813). Duchess of Brunswick. Married Charles William Ferdinand of Brunswick in 1764. One of their children is recorded in this archive. The first child of Frederick, Prince of Wales, and elder sister of George III, she was born at St James’s in chaotic haste after her father hurried her labouring mother away from Hampton Court to keep his parents from the birth. Her marriage to her second cousin, the hereditary prince of Brunswick, was agreed in 1763 — Horace Walpole thought partly because her mother wished to be rid of a meddlesome daughter. In Brunswick she remained stubbornly English, escaping court life at a summer retreat named Schloss Richmond, and in 1777 withdrew from court altogether after her husband installed an official mistress. Three of her four sons were born with disabilities; her daughter Caroline married the future George IV. After her husband was mortally wounded at Auerstedt in 1806 she fled, reached London in 1807, and died at Blackheath in 1813.
