Boreas is the harsh north wind, bringer of winter cold, pictured as a winged, wild-haired strongman sweeping down from Thrace. He carried off the Athenian princess Oreithyia to be his bride, and the grateful Athenians later credited him with wrecking the Persian fleet on their behalf.
