Kinship

How are Zeus and Hera related?

Brother and sister, children of the Titans Cronus and Rhea — and, because Cronus and Rhea are themselves siblings, first cousins as well. Hera is also Zeus’s wife and queen.

Zeus and Hera: brother and sister

  1. Brother through Cronus and Rhea: Zeus; Hera
  2. First cousin through Gaia and Uranus: Cronus → Zeus; Cronus → Hera

Cronus, warned that a child of his would overthrow him, swallows each of Rhea’s newborns. Hera is among the swallowed; Zeus alone escapes, because Rhea hands her husband a stone in swaddling clothes and hides the infant on Crete. Grown, Zeus forces his father to disgorge the others, and Hera returns with them. The order of birth depends on the poet. This archive follows Hesiod, in whose telling Zeus is the youngest of the six; in Homer’s Iliad, Hera names herself the eldest daughter of Cronus. Either way, they share both parents and are full siblings.

When the marriage comes is also disputed. Hesiod’s Theogony lists six earlier consorts — Metis, Themis, Eurynome, Demeter, Mnemosyne and Leto — before Zeus finally weds Hera; elsewhere she is the first wife and the only one. The Iliad, for its part, has the two sleeping together while Cronus still rules, hidden from their parents. In Hesiod the couple’s children are Ares, Hebe and Eileithyia, while Hephaestus is Hera’s alone, conceived without Zeus. Homer makes Zeus the smith-god’s father too; this archive keeps Hesiod’s version.

Their union repeats the one before it. Cronus and Rhea are themselves brother and sister, children of Gaia and Uranus, which is why the diagram finds a second, fainter route: through their parents, Zeus and Hera are first cousins too. Zeus takes a second sister, Demeter, as a consort as well. The pattern carries into the next generation, where Hebe, daughter of Zeus and Hera, marries Heracles, her half-brother through their father. So the goddess of marriage is wed to her own brother — and his endless infidelities, with her vengeance on his lovers and their offspring, supply a large share of the stories told about her.
