David Armstrong-Jones

David Armstrong-Jones, 2nd Earl of Snowdon, is a furniture maker, the son of Princess Margaret and Antony Armstrong-Jones and their only boy. He was born at Clarence House on 3 November 1961, a grandson of George VI and a nephew of Elizabeth II, and at his birth he was fifth in line to the throne. His godmother was his aunt the Queen. As a small boy he was taught alongside his cousin Prince Andrew in the schoolroom at Buckingham Palace, and at Bedales School he grew devoted to arts and crafts. Between 1980 and 1982 he trained as a craftsman at Parnham House in Dorset.
He set up his own workshop and then a firm, known as Linley, that made bespoke furniture noted for its neoclassical lines and inlaid woods. Known professionally as David Linley, he also wrote books on design and lectured widely. In 2006 he became chairman of the auction house Christie’s in Britain and later its honorary chairman for Europe, the Middle East, Russia and India.
In 1993 he married Serena Stanhope at St Margaret’s, Westminster. They have two children, Charles, born in 1999, and Margarita, born in 2002, and they announced their separation in 2020. From 2000 he and his family lived with his mother at Kensington Palace in her last years, and in April 2002 he stood vigil at the lying-in-state of his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. On his father’s death in 2017 he succeeded as Earl of Snowdon.
