George V (1865–1936). King of the United Kingdom (r. 1910–1936). Married Mary of Teck in 1893. Renamed the royal house Windsor in 1917, setting aside its German titles during the war. A serving naval officer from 1877 to 1892, he stood behind his elder brother Albert Victor in the succession until that brother's sudden death put him directly in line. His reign absorbed shock after shock: the Parliament Act 1911 fixed the supremacy of the elected Commons, the First World War toppled the empires of his cousins in Russia and Germany, and socialism, fascism, Irish republicanism, and the Indian independence movement reshaped the ground beneath the crown. He appointed Britain's first Labour ministry in 1924, and the Statute of Westminster of 1931 recognised the Dominions as independent states within the Commonwealth, even as the empire reached its greatest extent. Dogged by smoking-related illness, he died in January 1936.
