Mary Princess Royal
1897 – 1965 · Generation XXXVI · House of Windsor
Mary Princess Royal (1897–1965). The only daughter of George V and Queen Mary, she was born at York Cottage, Sandringham, and grew up among five brothers, two of whom became kings. In the First World War she lent her name to a Christmas gift fund for servicemen in 1914 and trained as a nurse at Great Ormond Street. In 1922 she married Henry, Viscount Lascelles, at Westminster Abbey; they had two sons and settled in Yorkshire, moving to Harewood House when he became Earl of Harewood in 1929. Her father named her Princess Royal in 1932. Close to her eldest brother, she visited him in Austria after the abdication. In the Second World War she headed the Auxiliary Territorial Service, and she later became chancellor of the University of Leeds. She died of a heart attack while walking in the grounds at Harewood in 1965.
