Portrait of Henry Duke of Gloucester

Henry Duke of Gloucester (1900–1974). The third son of George V and Queen Mary, he became the first son of a British monarch to be sent to school, going on to Eton. Unlike his brothers he chose the army, but as the king’s son he could not serve overseas with the 10th Royal Hussars. Created Duke of Gloucester in 1928, he had an affair with the future pilot Beryl Markham, to whom his solicitors afterwards paid an annuity to avert scandal, and in 1935 he married Lady Alice Montagu Douglas Scott; they had two sons. In 1939–40 he served in France as chief liaison officer and was slightly wounded when his staff car was attacked from the air. From 1945 to 1947 he was governor-general of Australia — the only prince ever to hold the post, originally meant for his brother the Duke of Kent. A series of strokes incapacitated him from 1965.
