Portrait of Louise Princess Royal

Louise Princess Royal (1867–1931). The eldest daughter of Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, she was a delicate, withdrawn child who became an accomplished musician. Weary of her mother’s protectiveness, she followed her aunt the Duchess of Argyll in marrying outside royalty, choosing Alexander Duff, 6th Earl of Fife, a companion of her father eighteen years her senior; they wed in 1889 and two days later he was created Duke of Fife. The marriage proved happy. They lived mostly at Mar Lodge in Scotland, rebuilt from her own rough sketch after a fire, and had two surviving daughters, for whom a second dukedom with a special remainder was created in 1900. Her father made her Princess Royal in 1905. In December 1911 the family was shipwrecked off Morocco aboard the SS Delhi, and her husband died of pleurisy in Egypt weeks later. She spent her widowhood quietly between Mar Lodge and Portman Square.
