Albert Victor Duke of Clarence (1864–1892). Second in line to the throne from birth; died in the influenza pandemic weeks after his engagement. The elder son of the future Edward VII and Alexandra, known as “Eddy,” he was schooled alongside his brother George, whose company his tutor thought he needed in order to work at all. The boys sailed round the Empire as naval cadets aboard HMS Bacchante; he then showed little interest in study at Trinity College, Cambridge, before joining the 10th Hussars. Rumour tied him to the Cleveland Street scandal of 1889, though nothing was ever proven. He proposed in vain to Alix of Hesse, was created Duke of Clarence and Avondale in 1890 and fell in love with the Catholic Hélène of Orléans, whose father forbade the match. In December 1891 he proposed to Princess May of Teck; pneumonia killed him at Sandringham days after his twenty-eighth birthday, and May laid her bridal wreath on his coffin before marrying George, who took his place in the succession.
