Queen Elizabeth II
1926 – 2022 · Generation XXXVII · Queen of the United Kingdom (r. 1952–2022) · House of Windsor
Elizabeth II (1926–2022). Queen of the United Kingdom (r. 1952–2022). Married Philip Mountbatten in 1947. They had 4 children. Seventy years on the throne — the longest reign in British history. Heir presumptive from the age of ten, she served in the Auxiliary Territorial Service during the Second World War and was twenty-five when her father's death made her queen of seven Commonwealth countries. Her reign ran through the Troubles, devolution, the decolonisation of Africa, and Britain's entry into and later departure from the European Communities; across her realms she was advised by more than 170 prime ministers, made landmark state visits to China, Russia, and the Republic of Ireland, and met five popes and fourteen US presidents. Family troubles — her “annus horribilis” of 1992, Diana's death in 1997 — drew criticism, yet her personal standing stayed remarkably high. She died at Balmoral, aged ninety-six, and was succeeded by her son Charles III.
