Son of Apollo and Coronis, schooled in medicine by the centaur Chiron, Asclepius grew so skilled that he crossed the one line no healer may: he began raising the dead. Zeus struck him down with the thunderbolt to keep the order of things, though some say he was afterward honored among the stars as the Serpent-bearer. His serpent-twined staff remains the emblem of the healing arts, and the sick once slept in his temples awaiting cures in dreams.
