Winged Nike is victory itself — in war, in the games, in any contest — swooping down to crown the winner with laurel. When her mother Styx brought her children to Zeus's side at the outbreak of the Titan war, Nike became his charioteer and inseparable companion, so often shown alighting on the outstretched hand of Zeus or Athena.
