Portrait of Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex

Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, is the younger son of King Charles III and Diana, Princess of Wales, and the brother of William, Prince of Wales. He was born at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, London, on 15 September 1984 and christened Henry Charles Albert David at St George’s Chapel, Windsor. He was educated at Wetherby School, Ludgrove School and Eton College. His mother died in a car crash in Paris in August 1997, shortly before his thirteenth birthday, and he walked behind her coffin at the funeral with his brother, father, grandfather and uncle.

After a gap year spent partly on a cattle station in Australia and with orphaned children in Lesotho, he entered the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 2005 and was commissioned in April 2006 into the Blues and Royals, a regiment of the Household Cavalry. He served in the British Army for ten years and was deployed twice to Afghanistan. The first tour, ten weeks in Helmand Province in 2007–08, was kept secret and ended when news of it was published. He then trained as an Apache helicopter pilot with the Army Air Corps and returned to Afghanistan in September 2012 for a tour of about twenty weeks as a co-pilot and gunner, based at Camp Bastion. He was promoted to captain in 2011 and left the army in June 2015.

Charity work ran alongside his army career. In 2006 he and Prince Seeiso of Lesotho founded Sentebale, named for the word meaning “forget me not”, to help vulnerable children in Lesotho in memory of their mothers. After seeing the Warrior Games in the United States he created the Invictus Games, an international sporting event for wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans, first held in London in 2014, and as of 2026 he remains its patron. In 2016 he joined his brother and sister-in-law in launching the mental health campaign Heads Together. He and Prince Seeiso resigned as patrons of Sentebale in March 2025 during a dispute between its trustees and the chair of its board.

On 19 May 2018 he married the American actress Meghan Markle at St George’s Chapel, Windsor. That morning Queen Elizabeth II created him Duke of Sussex, Earl of Dumbarton and Baron Kilkeel. Their son, Prince Archie, was born on 6 May 2019 and their daughter, Princess Lilibet, on 4 June 2021.

In January 2020 the couple announced that they would step back as senior members of the royal family and become financially independent. They moved to North America and settled in California, and in February 2021 Buckingham Palace confirmed that they would not return as working royals. Harry gave up his honorary military appointments and royal patronages and no longer uses the style His Royal Highness, though he remains a prince. The couple set up the Archewell organisation, gave a widely publicised television interview to Oprah Winfrey in March 2021 and appeared in a Netflix documentary series in December 2022. In 2023 Harry published a memoir, Spare.

He has also pursued a series of court cases in England. In December 2023 the High Court found in his favour on 15 of 33 sample articles in his claim that Mirror Group Newspapers had gathered information unlawfully, and awarded him £140,600. In January 2025 the publisher of the Sun apologised and agreed to pay him substantial damages to settle a similar claim. In May 2025 the Court of Appeal rejected his challenge over the level of police protection he receives in Britain. On 7 July 2026 the High Court ruled against him and six other claimants in their privacy case against Associated Newspapers, the publisher of the Daily Mail, finding that the allegations of unlawful information gathering, which the publisher denied, had not been proved.

Harry attended his father’s coronation in May 2023. On 10 July 2026 Buckingham Palace confirmed that the King and Queen had received him, Meghan and their children at Highgrove that day, in what it called a private family occasion. In August 2026, the BBC reported, the family moved from California back to the United Kingdom. A letter sent on the King’s behalf by the Lord Chamberlain, reported on 7 September 2026, stated that the couple are no longer working members of the royal family, remain private citizens and carry out their charitable work in a private capacity. As of September 2026 he is fifth in line to the throne.
