Peter Phillips

Peter Phillips (born 1977) is the elder child of Anne, Princess Royal, and her first husband, Captain Mark Phillips, and the eldest grandchild of Queen Elizabeth II. He was born at St Mary’s Hospital in London on 15 November 1977, and at birth stood fifth in line to the throne. Unusually for a monarch’s grandson, he has no title. His parents are said to have declined the Queen’s offer of one. He is a nephew of King Charles III and, as of 2026, twentieth in the line of succession, but he is not a working member of the royal family and has made his career in business.
He was educated at Port Regis preparatory school in Dorset and at Gordonstoun in Scotland, where he was head boy, and in the mid-1990s he played rugby for Scotland at youth level. He studied sports science at the University of Exeter and, after graduating in 2000, went into the business side of sport. He worked in corporate hospitality for the Jaguar racing team and in sponsorship for Williams, moved to the Royal Bank of Scotland in Edinburgh in 2005, and in March 2012 became managing director of SEL UK, a sports management company. In June 2016 he organised the Patron’s Lunch, a street party for 10,000 guests on The Mall in London marking the Queen’s ninetieth birthday.
In 2003, at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, he met Autumn Kelly, a Canadian management consultant. They were married at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, on 17 May 2008. Their daughter Savannah, born on 29 December 2010, was the Queen’s first great-grandchild, and a second daughter, Isla, followed in March 2012. In February 2020 the couple announced that they had separated the previous year and described the decision as amicable. The divorce was settled in June 2021. In August 2025 his engagement to Harriet Sperling, a paediatric nurse in the National Health Service, was announced. They were married on 6 June 2026 in a private ceremony at All Saints Church in Kemble, Gloucestershire, with the King and Queen among the congregation.
He appears with the family on its great public occasions. On 17 September 2022 he stood vigil with the Queen’s seven other grandchildren around her coffin in Westminster Hall, and two days later he walked behind it in the state funeral procession.
