Portrait of Princess Beatrice of York

Princess Beatrice was born at the Portland Hospital in London on 8 August 1988, the elder daughter of Andrew and Sarah, then Duke and Duchess of York, and the fifth grandchild of Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. At birth she was fifth in line to the throne, and as of 2026 the Royal Family’s published line of succession places her ninth. Her sister, Princess Eugenie, was born in 1990. Their parents separated in 1992 and divorced when Beatrice was seven.

She started school at Upton House in Windsor, moved on to Coworth Park School and from 2000 attended St George’s School, Ascot, where she was head girl in her final year. She has dyslexia, which was diagnosed when she was seven and which she made public in 2005. In 2008 she went to Goldsmiths, University of London, to read history and the history of ideas, and she graduated with a BA in 2011. Her early working life included an unpaid spell in the press office of the Foreign Office and a paid internship at Sony Pictures, which the Daily Telegraph reported she left after the company was hacked in late 2014. She also appeared as a non-speaking extra in the film The Young Victoria (2009). She is not a full-time working member of the royal family, and at the time of her wedding in 2020 the BBC reported that she worked for Afiniti, an artificial-intelligence software company, as vice-president of partnerships and strategy.

Much of her public work has been for charities. In April 2010 she ran the London Marathon for charity, the first member of the royal family to finish the race. With six friends she founded Big Change, which backs projects that help young people build skills beyond the academic curriculum, and since 2013 she has been royal patron of the Helen Arkell Dyslexia Centre, which she says helped her through school. In March 2025 she became patron of Borne, which funds research into premature birth. In September 2022 she joined her sister and six cousins in a vigil beside Elizabeth II’s coffin in Westminster Hall. Since Charles III’s accession that year her place in the succession has made her one of the Counsellors of State, who can carry out certain official duties when the King is abroad or unwell.

Her engagement to the property developer Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi was announced on 26 September 2019, after he proposed during a weekend in Italy earlier that month. The wedding was set for 29 May 2020 at the Chapel Royal, St James’s Palace, but was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The couple married on 17 July 2020 at the Royal Chapel of All Saints at Royal Lodge, Windsor, in a small private ceremony attended by Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. Beatrice wore a remodelled Norman Hartnell dress and the Queen Mary diamond fringe tiara, both lent by the Queen. She became stepmother to her husband’s son, Christopher Woolf. The couple’s daughter Sienna Elizabeth was born on 18 September 2021 at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London, and a second daughter, Athena Elizabeth Rose, was born at the same hospital on 22 January 2025, several weeks early. Since her marriage she has been styled officially as Princess Beatrice, Mrs Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi.
