Princess Eugenie of York

Princess Eugenie was born at the Portland Hospital in London on 23 March 1990, the younger daughter of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, then Duke of York, and Sarah Ferguson, and the sixth grandchild of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. She was christened Eugenie Victoria Helena at St Mary Magdalene Church, Sandringham, that December. Her parents divorced when she was six and shared custody of her and her elder sister, Princess Beatrice. At birth she was sixth in line to the throne. Later births have moved her down the line, and as of 2026 she stands twelfth.

At the age of twelve she was diagnosed with scoliosis, a curvature of the spine, and in October 2002 surgeons at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in London operated to correct it, fixing two titanium rods to her spine. In 2012 she became patron of the hospital’s redevelopment appeal, her first patronage, and in 2019 she was with her father when the hospital’s new Stanmore Building was formally opened. She became patron of the hospital’s charity that same year and of the Scoliosis Association UK in 2020.

She was educated at St George’s School in Windsor and at Marlborough College, then read English Literature and History of Art at Newcastle University, graduating in 2012. She spent a year in New York with the online auction house Paddle8 before joining the contemporary art gallery Hauser & Wirth in London in 2015, becoming a director there in 2017. She receives no allowance from the Privy Purse. Her public engagements are occasional and mostly tied to charities she backs, among them the Teenage Cancer Trust, whose unit in Leeds she opened in 2008 at her first solo engagement. In 2017 she and Julia de Boinville founded the Anti-Slavery Collective, and she spoke on modern slavery at a summit at the United Nations headquarters in New York in 2018. The following year the two announced a podcast on the subject.

Her engagement to Jack Brooksbank, a British marketing executive she had been seeing for seven years, was announced in January 2018, and they married at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, on 12 October 2018. Her dress, by Peter Pilotto and Christopher de Vos, was cut low at the back at her own request so that her surgical scar would show. As of 2026 the couple have three children: August, born at the Portland Hospital on 9 February 2021, Ernest, born on 30 May 2023, and a daughter, Adelaide, born in Lisbon on 3 August 2026. In May 2022 it was reported that the family had moved to Portugal, where Brooksbank was working, and would use Ivy Cottage at Kensington Palace when in Britain. Since her marriage she has been styled Princess Eugenie, Mrs Jack Brooksbank.
