Semele
Generation VIII · Mother of Dionysus
Youngest daughter of Cadmus and Harmonia, Semele was beloved of Zeus and, tricked by jealous Hera, asked him to appear in his full unveiled glory — a sight no mortal frame can survive, and she was consumed by the lightning. Zeus saved their unborn child from the fire, and years later Dionysus descended into Hades to bring his mother up to Olympus, where she lives deathless under the name Thyone. Of the five children of Cadmus and Harmonia, only Semele is seated in this archive. She alone of the line was raised to Olympus.
