Portrait of Amelia of the United Kingdom

Amelia of the United Kingdom (1783–1810). The fifteenth and youngest child of George III and Queen Charlotte, she was born at the Royal Lodge in Windsor Great Park and was often said to be her father’s favourite, his “Emily.” She was five when his first bout of madness struck, and the over-sheltered household that followed gave her and her sisters little chance to meet suitors. Signs of tuberculosis appeared when she was about fifteen. On a seaside cure at Weymouth in 1801 she fell in love with the equerry Charles FitzRoy, twenty-one years her senior; the Royal Marriages Act barred a match, yet she considered herself his wife. Erysipelas confined her to bed in October 1810, and she died on 2 November, nursed by her sister Mary. She left the King a mourning ring of her hair and FitzRoy everything else; her death is credited with hastening her father’s final descent into insanity.
