Mary Duchess of Gloucester (1776–1857). The eleventh child and fourth daughter of George III and Queen Charlotte, she was born at Buckingham Palace and raised in a closely sheltered household. Around 1796 she fell in love with the exiled Dutch Prince Frederick of Orange, but the king insisted that her elder sisters marry first, and Frederick died of an infection in 1799. She nursed her youngest sister, Amelia, through a painful final illness before Amelia’s death in 1810, and shared her eldest brother’s dislike of his wife, Caroline of Brunswick. In 1816, both aged forty, she married her first cousin William Frederick, Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh; the historian A. W. Purdue thought she was escaping her mother’s restrictive household. The childless couple lived at Bagshot Park, and as a widow she moved to White Lodge in Richmond Park. She outlived all fourteen of her siblings, dying in 1857 at eighty-one.
