Portrait of Elizabeth of the United Kingdom

Elizabeth of the United Kingdom (1770–1840). The seventh child and third daughter of George III and Queen Charlotte — “Eliza” to her family — she grew up in the sheltered company of her parents and sisters and filled the years with art, publishing books of her own engravings for charity and running a model farm at Old Windsor. In 1808 his Catholicism and her mother’s objections forced her to turn down the exiled Duke of Orléans. Only in 1818 did she marry, choosing Frederick, heir of the small German landgraviate of Hesse-Homburg; the union was reckoned a very happy one. As landgravine from 1820 she built roads, financed the palace’s remodelling and cared for the poor, though her projects swelled her husband’s debts. Widowed in 1829, she moved between Homburg, Frankfurt and her brother Adolphus’s court at Hanover, where she founded a school for the children of working mothers. She died at Frankfurt.
