Ernest Augustus King of Hanover (1771–1851). King of Hanover. Fifth son of George III, he took a disfiguring facial wound fighting Revolutionary France and sat in the House of Lords as Duke of Cumberland, holding an extremely conservative line while enemies spread lurid allegations against him. When Victoria inherited Britain in 1837, Salic law barred her from Hanover, so its crown passed to Ernest — ending a personal union of the two thrones dating from 1714 and making him Hanover's first resident ruler since George I. He annulled the kingdom's liberal constitution and dismissed the protesting Göttingen Seven, the Brothers Grimm among them, yet governed with general success for fourteen years and put down an attempted revolution in 1848. His son George V succeeded him.
