Portrait of Augustus Frederick Duke of Sussex

Augustus Frederick Duke of Sussex (1773–1843). The sixth son of George III and Queen Charlotte, he was kept from military training by asthma and studied at Göttingen instead — the only surviving son of the king without an army career. In 1793 he married Lady Augusta Murray in Rome and again in London, both times without his father’s knowledge; the Court of Arches voided the union under the Royal Marriages Act, and their two children, surnamed d’Este, were deemed illegitimate. Created Duke of Sussex in 1801, he was a Whig who championed Catholic emancipation, an end to the slave trade, reform of Parliament and equal civil rights for Jews and Dissenters. He became the first Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of England in 1813 and presided over the Royal Society from 1830 to 1838. Victoria’s favourite uncle, he gave her away at her wedding; he chose burial at Kensal Green over a state funeral.
