Charlotte, Princess Royal (1766–1828). Queen of Württemberg. Eldest daughter of George III, she married Frederick of Württemberg in London in 1797, then left England with him and never lived there again. When French troops occupied the duchy in 1800 the couple fled to Vienna; Napoleon's recognition of Frederick as king made her a queen in 1806 — a title her father refused to use in correspondence, Frederick then standing among Napoleon's allies. Her only child was stillborn. Widowed in 1816, she stayed on at Ludwigsburg Palace, stood godmother by proxy to the future Queen Victoria, and crossed to Britain just once more, in 1827, seeking treatment for dropsy. She died at Ludwigsburg and lies in its royal vault.
