Apate is deceit made flesh, one of the dark daughters Night bore with no father, and a fitting sister to Strife and Misery. The Romans knew her counterpart as Fraus, and later moralizing tales counted her among the baneful spirits loosed upon humankind. Hesiod is explicit that Nyx bore this child alone, without any father.
