Nemesis deals out due measure: the retribution that humbles hubris and rebalances fortune when mortals climb too high. A fatherless daughter of Nyx in Hesiod, she appears in another old tradition as the true mother of Helen — laying the egg that Leda only found and kept warm. Hesiod is explicit that Nyx bore this child alone, without any father.
